The Links

Shodor Curriculum Materials - Online resource covering a wide grade range of math, science, and integrated topics.

National Library of Virtual Manipulatives - A comprehensive collection of K12 math simulations organized using NCTM' s Principles and Standards

Learning Science - A collection of science simulations organized using the National Science Education Standards.

ChemCollective - The Chemistry Collective is a collection of virtual labs, scenario-based learning activities, and concepts tests which can be incorporated into a variety of teaching approaches as pre-labs, alternatives to textbook homework, and in-class activities for individuals or teams.

PhET - A very useful collection of physics simulations covering a range of mechanics and E&M topics.

Mr Mont.com - Another very useful collection of physics simulations (click on “games”).

Science Notebooks - A practical guide to using notebooks in a science classroom.

Online Java Timer - A java count up or down timer useful in managing the time you give students to complete investigations.

Can’t find a simple simulation you are looking for? You can create on in excel by placing the equation in the formula bar.

Types of Activities

Qualitative summary - When students are investigating a phenomena using a simulation, they can develop a list of a qualitative statements about the phenomena (as the amount of quantity X increases, quantity Y decreases). Simulation Image. Simulation Link

Swiss Cheese Data Table - Students are given a partially completed data table and asked to use the data from a simulation to fill in the missing. Example word document. Simulation Image. Simulation Link.

Data table creation - Students create a data table for collecting data from the simulation. This activity works well as a notebook activity. Simulation Image. Simulation Link. Simulation Image 2. SImulation Link 2

Equation Evaluation - Students collect data from the simulation and evaluate a number of possible equations to determine which equation “mathematically” describes the phenomena. Example Table. Simulation Image Simulation Link.
